Open position to work on Cell nanomechanics

Description

Mechanical stress is considered as one of the most influential physical factors in biology, and at the same time, one of the least characterized, due to the lack of appropriate instrumentation. The core of this PhD project is the development of technologies and related instrumentation able to study cell mechanics and dynamics. Nanomechanical devices, and particularly, nanoresonators, are the best suited tool to address this challenge as the translation of the “drum vibration” of the cells into a measurable signal can be made in a very direct manner with these devices. Also, interaction of the cell with the environment can be studied in real time, and thus the developed devices will be ideal tools for the study of drug effects, drug delivery vehicles and for the assessment of the toxicity of nanoparticles. The work will be developed in a multidisciplinary environment with experts in nanotechnology, nanofabrication, chemistry and biology. The work involves experimental and theoretical skills, instrumentation design and nanomechanical and biological characterization. A fellowship for one year is offered, with further extension to 4 years until completion of PhD. This contract is funded in the frame of the ERC Starting Grant project NANOFORCELLS A nanomechanical tool-box for the investigation of cell mechanics. Contact: Dr. Montserrat Calleja
